Spotify Seen Testing Real-Time Synced Lyrics in Select Market

Spotify is currently the largest music streaming platform in the world with over 113 million registered users in over 65 countries. Despite being the largest streaming platform, it still lacks lyrics functionality. If you are a long-time Spotify user, you must know, Spotify had lyrics feature in the past, but now Spotify has removed that for some reason. Currently, only except Japan, the lyrics feature is not available on both mobile and desktop Spotify app. Despite being requested several times by the users, Spotify didn’t budge to respond. But now it has been spotted that Spotify is testing a live real-time lyrics perfectly synced with the music. The feature looks awfully similar to what Apple is providing with the iOS 13. If you are on iOS 13 and use Apple Music, you know what I am talking about.

The testing is happening in select markets; however, in a comment to the TechCrunch, a Spotify spokesperson declined to state the country names. From users’ reactions on Twitter, it can be assumed that the testing is currently undergoing in Mexico, Indonesia, and Canada.

From the above tweets, we can see how well this feature works. The lyrics scroll by as your music starts moving to show you lyrics of the words said in real-time. From the screenshots shared online, it seems Musixmatch powers this feature. Musixmatch is a music metadata and lyrics database company based in London.

It is good to see Spotify adding lyrics once again to the App. Earlier Spotify had lyrics feature, which then was replaced by Behind the Lyrics feature. Behind the Lyrics is an interesting feature that tells you behind the scene story of the song, as well as meanings for a few words, said in the song. It is a great feature, no doubt in that, but it is still not that helpful as a full lyrics support. Currently, there is no word if this feature will ever get a wide launch or die in the testing phase. In a comment to TechCrunch, a Spotify spokesperson said the following:

“We can confirm we are testing this feature in a small number of markets….. At Spotify, we are always testing new products and experiences but have no further news to share at this time.”

Spotify is known to test many wild ideas, but not all of those tests see the light of a wide launch. So, it is safe to say that this feature might not come at all to all of us. For now, it is good to see Spotify is entertaining the idea of adding live lyrics feature to users worldwide.

Do you use Spotify, or are you an Apple Music person? If you use Spotify, how excited are you for this feature? I am curious to know what you think of this new feature. Please share your thoughts in the comment section.
